Australia in Brief

Australia's national day, Australia Day, on January 26, is the biggest day of celebration in the country and is observed as a public holiday in all states and territories.

It marks the date in 1788 when Captain Arthur Phillip, of the British Royal Navy, commanding a fleet of 11 ships, sailed into Port Jackson (Sydney Cove). Phillip formally took possession of the eastern part of the continent for England and established a settlement, now Australia's largest city, Sydney.

It's the day for everyone who calls themselves Australian. A day to reflect on what people of Australia have achieved and what they can be proud of.

Australia is an independent Western democracy with a population of more than 20 million, one of the world's most urbanised countries. Also a multicultural society which has been enriched by over six million settlers from almost 200 nations. Four out of ten Australians are migrants or the first-generation children of migrants, half of them from non-English speaking backgrounds. Australia is known as the "Land Down Under" because it is below the equator. It is also the only continent that is also a country.

The first official celebrations were held in 1818 to mark the 30th anniversary of white settlement. Governor Macquarie officiated at a thirty-gun salute during the day and a dinner ball at Government House that evening. During the early nineteenth century the anniversary was called 'Foundation Day' and was usually marked by sporting events. Alongside the celebrations 1988 was named a Year of Mourning for Australia's Aboriginal people, who also regarded the year as a celebration of survival. Australia Day celebrations have continued to grow in number and stature with the celebrations continuing to involve a larger and broader audience.

Australia Day is marked by civic celebrations around the country, including Order of Australia and Australian of the Year awards for outstanding achievement. Air Force air displays are held in some capital cities. Citizenship ceremonies are also held on Australia Day. Fireworks celebrations are held in many towns and cities around the country. Two significant events in the Australian music scene occur on Australia Day - the Triple J Hottest 100, usually celebrated by fans with a barbecue and party, and the Sydney leg of the Big Day Out music festival. We hope you go out on Australia Day and get involved in the biggest community celebration of the year.
