On 14th April National Pecan Day is celebrated. As the name suggests, it is
a day where people enjoy the delicious nut called pecan. Although high in
fat content, these nuts are good source of minerals like potassium, thiamine,
magnesium, zinc, copper, phosphorous, iron, folic acid and vitamin B6.
The scientific name for the pecan tree
is Caryaillioensis and is native to North America. The pecan nut is an important
food source for all the American Indians for many years. In fact the name pecan
has been derived from a Native American word of Algonquin origin that is used
for describing “all nuts requiring a stone to crack.”
The United States is the largest producer
of pecan nuts in the whole world. Their economic contribution from harvested
pecans is around nine percent.

People have adopted their own style of celebrating this National Pecan Day by
cracking open and eating few pecan nuts. They also prepare pecan pies, smash
up the nuts into oil. Also they enjoy the taste of ice cream by sprinkling chopped
nuts on it.
Pecan trees are the only nut trees that
are native to North America, which is a good reason to celebrate National Pecan
Day on April 14 every year. Pecans can be used in many interesting and surprising
ways thereby suiting personal tastes. Besides their delightful taste, pecans
also are quite useful for health. Research also has revealed that peanuts are
antioxidants that help in reducing the threat of cancer.
Experts opine that pea is such a great
nut, that they have allotted two days for enjoying the taste of pecan nuts.
One is in March while the other is in the month of April.

So far as the origin and history of National Pecan Day is concerned, researchers
are unable to find out the details viz. its creator, exact date of origin. Only
it is known that since April is acclaimed as the National Pecan Month, it becomes
more logical to celebrate National Pecan Day in the month of April only.
