St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17, commemorating the patron saint of Ireland, Bishop Patrick (AD389-461), who, about AD 432, left his home in the seven Valley, England & intoduced Christianity into Ireland. Patrick became very successful at winning converts. One tradition of today is the Shamrock. People adopted the custom of wearing a shamrock on his feast day.
In Ireland, St. Patrick's Day has traditionally been a religious occasion. In the 1970s, Irish laws mandated that pubs be closed on March 17th. St. Patrick's Day has evolved into more of a secular holiday, even though originally it was a Catholic holy day.

The first Irish celebrations on the date of Saint Patrick's death were noisy affairs. As the Irish emigrated around the world, they took the Saint Patrick celebrations with them, and today parades are held in some of the unlikeliest places you can imagine. Celebrations take place with people dancing and feasting all day. Soldiers march down the street on St. Patrick's Day. Groups hold parades with bagpipes and drums. St. Patrick's Day parades became a show of strength for Irish Americans. There are parade's at the main cities and people go there to watch them. It happens because of when the Irish came to America. People usually wear green on this holiday. If you don't wear green people pinch you constantly. In Chicago there is a huge parade on St. Patrick's Day. There are a lot of people dressed in green watching the parade go by.
Shamrocks & leprechauns are symbols and green is the color of Saint Patrick's Day. Green symbolizes the lush landscape of Ireland. Since earliest times, the Irish have considered most shamrocks, particularly the small-leaved white clover, as good-luck symbols. This superstition has persisted in modern times among people of many nationalities. Shamrocks or various representations of the plant are worn by celebrants on Saint Patrick's Day. Many believe that the hop clover was the original shamrock picked by Saint Patrick. Leprechauns are a mythical race of elves who bestow their hidden treasure on anyone who can catch them. They symbolize the famous "luck of the Irish."
