While the ex-Bat can't match the maximum suavity of Roger Moore's '60s TV Saint, Kilmer works harder than usual in this surprisingly entertaining thriller from director Noyce (Patriot Games). Time after time, the freelance thief of many disguises escapes certain doom in Moscow and London, but the orphan-with-no-name's formidable emotional armor is cracked when he warms up a poetic cold fusionist (Shue) on the verge of a major breakthrough. Both leads are appealing and vulnerable, and Shue is a natural in the Sandra Bullock role.
