Farrah Fawcett: Dies from cancer at sixty two
Actress Farrah Fawcett, whose feathery blonde mane and ubiquitous swimsuit poster transformed the once-unknown "Charlie's Angels" star into a '70s icon, died Thursday at about 9.30 a.m. at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica, said Paul Bloch, her publicist. She was sixty two.
The Texas-born actress was diagnosed with a rare anal cancer in 2006 and chronicled her valiant fight for survival in a two-hour documentary.
Fawcett came to Hollywood from Corpus Christi, Texas. Her stunning looks and girl-next-door demeanor landed her a modeling gig within two weeks. Fawcett burst into the national consciousness during the Bicentennial, debuting in September 1976 as one of three gorgeous female investigators on "Charlie's Angels." she captivated critics with 'Burning Bed' and other serious roles.
A poster of Fawcett in a one-piece red swimsuit made her a generation's favorite pinup.
The actress was equally known for her bizarre off-screen exploits: in 1997, her appearance with David Letterman was quite unclear, a violent fight with a spurned boyfriend followed the next year, and her stormy relationship with actor Ryan O'Neal.
A few days before Fawcett's death, her longtime love Ryan O'Neal, sixty eight, told Barbara Walters in a "20/20" interview: "I've asked her to marry me, again, and she's agreed." He hoped she would hang on long enough for them to wed.
In the documentary she expressed her wish to stay alive and not die of this disease. She prayed to God for a miracle that never came!
