Katie Holmes: Set to appear in indie comedy

Katie Holmes, who wasn't afraid of the dark, has just wrapped up Guilllermo del Toro's monster remake of 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark.'

Holmes is now set to take over the role of star as well as the executive producer in the indie comedy 'The Romantics,' accoding to Variety magazine.

Mrs. Tom Cruise will fill the spot left by Liv Tyler in the role of Laura, one of eight college friends who come together for a wedding. The project begins shooting this week in New York.

'The Romantics' also stars Anna Paquin (of 'True Blood') as the bride, Josh Duhamel (of 'The Watchmen') as the groom, Malin Akerman (of 'Couples Retreat'), Elijah Wood , Adam Brody and Jeremy Strong.

Holmes plays Paquin’s maid of honor — a girl who has a past with the groom.
