Mel Gibson: Complied with terms of probation
Mel Gibson pleaded no contest in August 2006 to a misdemeanor charge of drunken driving in which he made derogatory comments about Jews, but still technically he will remain on probation for another 18 months. He is not required to report at Superior Court again after Judge Lawrence Mira approved his progress.
According to L.A.'s City News Service, Superior Court Judge Lawrence Mira said, "Good luck to you as you continue on your rehabilitation".
Deputy District Attorney Gina Satriano said outside the court, "Assuming there is no violation on the terms of the probation, it will be finished at the end of 36 months".
After his no-contest plea, Gibson was sentenced to three years of probation, paid about $1,600 in fines and had to attend Alcoholics Anonymous and other meetings.
Mel Gibson, 52, was escorted into the Malibu courthouse by sheriff's deputies through a back door to avoid a crush of photographers.
Deputy District Attorney Gina Satriano said Mel Gibson attended five AA meetings every week for nearly five months and three per week for seven months. He also completed a 90-day program for drunken-driving offenders that included individual and group counseling, Satriano said.
She said Gibson has also volunteered to make a public service announcement.
Mel Gibson has repeatedly apologized for making the derogatory comments about Jews to the sheriff's deputy who arrested him. |
